Community Welfare School
Empowerment Through Community Participation
Strategic Location of the School
Community Welfare School (CWS) is situated in a peripheral area of Lucknow called Rahim Nagar Dudauli. The area is a dumping ground of municipal waste and is predominantly inhabited by ragpickers, daily wages laborers, and people from the lower strata of the society mainly consisting of migrant workers. The area was devoid of any school and parents and children had no formal experience of an educational institution. Thus, we began the construction of the Community Welfare School (CWS) in 2015 with 5 classes initially intending to provide the children with good education and moral values that would become an asset to the society and our country.
Our Results: 2016-2024
Through the sheer hard work of the teachers involved, the lives of students have greatly improved. From mathematical calculations to English and Hindi vocabulary, the students have shown great potential.
Even though we are affiliated with the U.P. board, we use NCERT books. We continue to ensure that grades are not the end goal but student participation and attendance. Hence many scholarships and incentives based on attendance and student participation in various programs are awarded to the students.
We at CWS believe in education beyond the classroom; students take part in various art and craft competitions, science exhibits, debates, quiz, variety entertainment programs, value added skills, and sports activities.
Student Strength and Pandemic
During the 2020-21 academic more than 300 students were enrolled. However, with the advent of Covid-19 and subsequent lock-down, the school lost more than 250 students as their families decided to return to their native villages due to financial constraints. Only a few of them have returned. Thus the academic year 2021-22 was a new challenge and a new beginning for us. Year 2022 and 2023 brought back our old students and more. In 2024, we will continue to be a role model school for surrounding communities.
It is ONLY through sheer “Hard Work and Honesty”, we will be able to meet the challenges in coming future.
Other Services Offered to the Community
We run evening classes for elderly people who may not have access to formal education or were simply denied it. CWS has been serving as a health care center for various government programs. Health and vaccination health camps are run consistently. During lockdown and other periods of need, food ration packets were ( are) distributed to the needy families. Community members on different occasions distribute notebooks, pencils, bags and pencil boxes to the students of the school.
Community Welfare School is also part of the Government of India’s Right to Education (RTE) program. Under RTE, the entire educational fee of a child is exempted up to class 8. The state governments open this scheme every year between February and March and students are selected through a lottery system and allocated schools within their neighbourhood. The expenses related to the purchase of books and uniform is bourne by the government. The fees are jointly shared by the government and the school. The students from Uttar Pradesh can get their names enrolled by using this website.
A Vocational Centre had also been inaugurated on January 26th, 2021 which offers courses on plumbing, painting, silai, AC and Refrigeration, home nurse (caregiver), electrical wiring, computer, and many more.
